The Charm and Challenges of the Mountain Railway

13.06.2016 — The panoramic view from the 384 kilometer rail track of the Rhätische Bahn railway attracts travelers from all over the world to the Swiss canton Graubünden. Read how Dussmann Service keeps interiors and exteriors clean at two of the long-established company’s sites.

Imposing viaducts, tight curves and dizzying heights: Rail fans are unanimous that the Rhätische Bahn is one of the world’s most spectacular railways. Every year, around ten million passengers travel the narrow gauge tracks to experience the charm of the Alpine scenery in the trilingual canton, Graubünden. In 2008, the Albula and Bernina lines were awarded unesco World Heritage status. Dussmann Service is proud to play its part in the “lifeline of the Bündner valleys”: In January 2016, 14 Dussmann operatives started provision of cleaning services at sites in Chur and Landquart. The decision to work together with a strong facility management partner is an innovation for the Rhätische Bahn which has been in operation for over 120 years. “Dussmann Service impressed us with a well-reasoned concept, with service strength and reliability”, explains Fabian Bieler, head of property services at the Rhätische Bahn. The Dussmann team carries out professional maintenance cleaning and window cleaning at a production building and at administrative offices. At Landquart station, cleaning operatives are also responsible for keeping platforms clean and tidy and facades free of graffiti. The customized cleaning concept includes the cleaning and care of floors, walls, sanitary facilities, furnishings and technical equipment. Naturally, environmentally compatible cleaning products and modern cleaning techniques are used and high standards of hygiene are maintained. The project sounds modest, particularly for an experienced provider such as Dussmann Service. However, a closer look reveals the special challenges: The two locations are 15 kilometers away from each other necessitating complex logistics. At the production building, Rhätische Bahn technicians carry out exacting carriage maintenance tasks, and cleaning operatives must be discrete, conscientious and competent. Window cleaning is also on the schedule and this involves deployment of rail-mounted scaffolding. The station is an important goods shipment center and is in operation 24 hours a day. As a result, the speed and precision of cleaning services are major factors. Dussmann Service enjoys the full confidence of its client; trust and reliability are a part of everyday operations and this is palpable to every passenger of the mountain railway—a comforting feeling while enjoying the spectacular views.
